Alexandria, Va. — Conquer Cancer®, the ASCO Foundation, is pleased to announce the recipients of two mentorship awards distributed through the Women Who Conquer Cancer initiative.

Sharon H. Giordano, MD, MPH, FASCO, will receive the Hologic, Inc., Endowed Women Who Conquer Cancer Mentorship Award. Ines Vaz-Luis, MD, PhD, will receive the 2024 International Women Who Conquer Cancer Mentorship Award recipient.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Conquer Cancer®, the ASCO Foundation, in collaboration with the Carson Leslie Foundation (CLF) #cureMEdullo, has awarded the Carson Leslie Foundation #cureMEdullo Team Science Grant in Medulloblastoma powered by EveryGrant® to a group of researchers at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center/Johns Hopkins Medicine. The recipients will study a new approach for reducing the risk of cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) and neurocognitive outcomes following CMS in pediatric patients with medulloblastoma.

Conquer Cancer®, the ASCO Foundation, in collaboration with Pfizer Global Medical Grants, announced two new grants totaling $1,000,000 to support quality improvement projects to address disparities in delivery of care and treatment outcomes for patients of color with metastatic breast cancer (mBC).

For Latina women in oncology and cancer research, the disparities are glaring: As of 2018, only 4.7% of oncologists were Hispanic and/or Latinx. Of those, only 33.6% are women.*

“We are underrepresented,” Gladys Rodriguez, MD, of the START Center for Cancer Care, said in a talk at the 2021 ASCO Annual Meeting. “Part of that is related to the lack of role models, lack of access to education, and seeing oneself as a possible physician.”**

ASCO and Conquer Cancer are deeply saddened by the death of oncology luminary, health equity champion, and ASCO Humanitarian Award honoree Edith P. Mitchell, MD, MACP, FCCP, FRCP (London), on January 21, 2024.
