Behind the Breakthroughs
Cultivating Support for Colorectal Cancer Research
By 2030, colorectal cancer is predicted to become the leading cause of cancer death in people younger than 50.* Young adult and Black populations are also seeing a particularly sharp increase in colorectal cancer diagnoses. And yet, despite the rising number of diagnoses, stigmas remain common. Colorectal cancer lacks the same open and transparent discussion compared to other more publicized types like breast or lung. The result? Less research funding and, subsequently, fewer treatment and educational resources.

Following the death of his brother in 2020, NBC journalist Craig Melvin made it his mission to increase public awareness and raise support for colorectal cancer research.

Along with two-time Conquer Cancer grant recipient and colorectal oncologist Dr. Kimmie Ng, Craig joins this episode of our Your Stories podcast to emphasize the critical role donors play in advancing colorectal cancer research. Hosted by Dr. Don Dizon, Craig and Dr. Ng share a candid conversation about the stigmas and misconceptions around colorectal cancer and the impact of Dr. Ng’s ongoing research. They also discuss the stark increase of diagnoses in Black patients and young adults, along with the critical role of donor support in bringing new discoveries to patients.
